According to Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report, employees desire GenAI in the workplace but want clear guidance and support from their leaders.
Generative AI usage has nearly doubled over the last six months, with 75% of global knowledge workers now using it.
Although business leaders recognise generative AI as crucial, many feel their organisations lack a clear strategy and vision to transition from individual usage to harnessing AI for expanding profits.
The pressure to demonstrate immediate returns on investment is causing leaders to hesitate, even though the adoption of generative AI seems unavoidable.

BYOAI (Bring Your Own AI): 78% of workers use their private generative AI tools.
Generative AI Implementation: 75% of workers already use AI at work, with 46%
starting in the last six months.
Limited Knowledge: 79% of leaders know AI is important, but 60% don’t have a plan in place to use it.
New Hiring Standards: 66% of leaders wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills.
Insufficient Support: Only 25% of companies teach their workers how to use AI.

Employees are taking the initiative to develop their AI skills independently rather than waiting for formal guidance or training from their employers.
A significant 76% recognize the importance of generative AI abilities in staying competitive in the current job market.
In addition, 69% of employees believe generative AI knowledge can help them get promotions more quickly, and an even higher 79% think it will expand their career opportunities.
Over the past six months, there has been a 160% surge in non-technical professionals using LinkedIn Learning courses to enhance their generative AI skills.
Project managers, architects, and administrative assistants are among those eager to learn. Writers, designers, and marketers are at the forefront of this movement.
Marketers are especially interested, with many planning to use generative AI this year to increase efficiency, concentrate on more valuable tasks (55%), and create optimized and engaging content that resonates with their target audiences (51%).
Interestingly, the adoption of generative AI skills is not limited to the technology sector. The industries leading this adoption are administrative and support services, real estate, and retail, outpacing even the technology sector.
